Nursing is the largest sector in the healthcare profession, and one that is critical in determining patient outcomes. Nurses are frequently required to make critical decisions on how to care for sick and frail patients, and this is a task that is complicated as methods of care evolve and grow more complex.
Within hospitals, good care depends on nurses being able to navigate sophisticated, life-saving technologies, alongside using complex information management systems that require skills in analysis and synthesis. Care outside of hospital settings is equally complex. Nurses are now called upon to coordinate care with a variety of clinicians and community agencies; to help patients manage chronic illnesses, thereby preventing acute care episodes and disease progression; and to use a variety of technological tools to improve the quality and effectiveness of care. An educated nursing workforce is better equipped to meet these modern demands.
Today, the ability to effectively provide high quality nursing care is reliant on nursing competency. Clinical nurses must be knowledgeable in numerous areas of healthcare, including cognitive and psycho-physical, clinical skills, critical thinking, decision making and the ability to enhance learning through academic knowledge and clinical experience. Given the sensitive nature of their work, nurses must also possess the skills, knowledge, and personal qualities necessary for safe, proficient, and effective practice.
The primary goals of nursing education remain the same: nurses must be prepared to meet the diverse needs of their patients; function as leaders; and promote science that benefits both patients and the capacity of health professionals to deliver safe, quality patient care. At the same time, nursing education needs to be transformed to prepare nursing graduates to work collaboratively and effectively with other health professionals in an evolving health care system in a variety of settings. Hence improving the education system and achieving a more educated workforce is the need of the hour.
